Thursday 16th March – Ski ***** Masella, Spain – Sunny and warm
Max 41.05 kts, out 6hrs 20 mins, covered 47.25 miles :)
Good night in the car park at the small Spanish ski resort of Masella 1700,
up at eight as the carpark started to fill-up. Another perfect day with
bright sunshine so the skiing was on:) We didn’t want to get on the
slopes too early as our new Italian VW camper friend told us it was icy
first thing so had a relaxed porridge breakfast. While I sorted the ski kit
out Mag packed a picnic, a selection of goodies she found including hard
boiled eggs, a whole pack of cheese, day old bread, cheese fingers, nuts,
strawberries and mini choc bars – the complete feast:). Left the van at
9.30 and with few places left in the carpark we thought it would be busy.
Walked the short distance to the pass office and as they didn’t do 4
hours we went for a day for 82 Euros including insurance with the ticket
being the old-fashioned sort on a metal clip.
We went up on the nearest lift which was the Masella Jet and did the runs
left and right to get our feet. The snow was a little icy in places but was
soon next to perfect with very few people about, just how we like it:)
Where they all disappeared to we don’t know!! We then used the only
button of the day, the Rasos which took you nearly to the top of La Tosa
(2535m). After a bit of a bumpy start on an un-pisted red at the top it
turned into a great narrow path, the Isards then into an amazing fast, long
and wide red through a fantastic valley with imposing cliffs to the left
and pine forest to the right. skiing doesn’t get much better than this:)
To avoid the button you could ski down to the Coma Oriola at 1950m, then
ski down to the Jumbo Tosa which took you back to the top, it was so good
we did this several times!
Then with lunch approaching we went to the top of La Tosa turned left onto
the blue 2 Estacions which took you towards La Molina where we skied on the
Feb 9th, can’t believe it’s that long ago! We found a nice spot for a
picnic and devoured the contents of the rucksack and delicious it was:)
Suitably refreshed we continued on the outer limit of the resort and the
pistes just went on and on to the near deserted La Pia Express. There was a
great variety of reds and blues back to this lift which we did before
heading back to Masella past the snowpark to the TGV Masella the last major
lift we needed to go on to have used them all! Getting well knackered now
we finished our top day by doing our two favourite runs from the top of La
Tosa left and right both through huge rocky gorges, we got to do one Mag
wanted to do, the Panoramica which as its name suggests offered amazing
views over to the French Pyrenees and Andorra and I even managed a short
black, the Pala Directa.
We were dead on our feet and completely shot to pieces so headed back to
the van for a well-deserved cuppa and cake. Our Italian friend came to say
good bye as he was leaving to see his young son and said he had a smile on
his face all day. His parking spot was better than ours so I moved the
short distance to be in the sun. Another cuppa and read in the sun, then
Mag’s chicken and mushroom surprise for tea as the sun set behind the
mountains. A school group on holiday are staying near-by and were in high
spirits. A little noisy for a while but they quietened down as it got
dark. Time to move off in search of new adventures tomorrow as too
knackered to ski two days in a row!
Masella is a top resort with some amazing long runs perfect for spring
skiing and would recommend it to anyone.
